Warriors Rally to Defeat 'Yotes, 12-8, in Ten Innings

SEATTLE, WA--Top-ranked Lewis-Clark State scored nine runs in the final three innings to defeat 13th-ranked Albertson, 12-8, in ten innings, in the University of British Columbia Tournament, at Husky Ballpark, in Seattle, Wash., Saturday evening.

Mike Madrid led Lewis-Clark State (18-6) with four hits, all singles, and he also scored three runs. Zeph Zinsman drove in six runs, three of which came on a massive home run, his ninth, to centerfield in the sixth. Tory Haven went 3-for-6 with four RBI, including a three-run blast, his ninth of the year, in the top of the tenth.  He also extended his hitting streak to ten games.

Andy Torres (5-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing two innings of no-hit ball, the day after pitching three innings as a starter.

LCSC trailed 8-3 going into the top of the eighth. Zinsman cut the lead to four on a sacrifice fly to left, plating Madrid. In the ninth, the Warriors got to Albertson (11-7-1) reliever Eric Jensen. Emerson Frostad started with a base hit. Micah Furtado and Mark Gallagher followed suit with singles to load the bases. With one out, Haven singled to left, scoring Frostad. Zinsman followed with a two-run double down the rightfield line, cutting the Coyote lead to one. Sam Hackett then come on to pitch for Albertson. After intentionally walking Gabe Stajduhar to load the bases, David Bernstine hit a sacrifice fly to deep leftfield, scoring Neil Litchfield who pinch ran for Haven.

Torres came in for the Warriors and shut the ‘Yotes down in order in the home half of the ninth.

With one out in the tenth, Furtado, who's hitting streak sits at a team-best 11 games, roped a double to right. Morgan followed with a single and Furtado moved up to third. Madrid singled to right, scoring Furtado, and then moved up a base on the rightfielder’s throw to third. Albertson’s sixth pitcher came in, Eric Bergstrom, trying to stop the Warriors who now had a 9-8 lead. Haven hit a 2-2 pitch over the centerfield wall to seal the victory, 12-8.

Hackett (0-1) was credited with the loss. Nick Williams had pitched 6.1 innings of solid baseball. He gave up six hits and three runs, all earned, while striking out four. He retired 11 of the first 14 batters he faced and did not let an L-C player reach second until the sixth inning.

Patrick Gonzales was the ‘Yotes leading hitter, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Scott Freeman went 2-for-5 with three RBI, blasting his third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh.

Lewis-Clark State now moves on to Hawai’i to play in the 27th Annual Ohana Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Easter Tournament, starting Monday.
