Jordon Rasmussen's performance Friday afternoon was remarkable on several levels. Not only did the Linfield pitcher dominate a sturdy Lewis-Clark State offense for eight innings, he did so in his first start of the season in chilly weather.
Oh, and just for a topper: he's only a sophomore.
Rasmussen's dazzling four-hit outing almost completely shut down Lewis-Clark State's offense. And the rest of the Wildcat roster didn't perform too shabbily either as Linfield throttled the Warriors 11-3 in Friday's final game of the Cannon Building Supply Series at Harris Field.
It was the Wildcats first victory over L-C since March 29, 1995.
Earlier in the day, Albertson College nudged Concordia of Portland 6-5 and Concordia then slipped past Linfield 8-7.
The Warriors (3-1) will face Concordia (1-1) today at 4 p.m. Albertson (2-3) will play Linfield (1-1) at 10 and Eastern Oregon at 1 p.m.
Rasmussen, a 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore, showed a variety of solid pitches that kept L-C batters off-balance. In his eight innings of work, the right-hander surrendered one unearned run, four hits and two walks.
"That was as well as a guy has pitched against us in a long time," said Warrior coach Ed Cheff, in his 28th year at L-C.
It wasn't until the eighth inning that the Warriors were able to get their one run off of Rasmussen, but it came as a result of first basemen Alex Justus' throwing error on a what could have been a routine double play.
The Tigard, Ore., native used a deceiving changeup to set up the rest of his repertoire. The majority of his eight strikeouts came from his off-speed pitch. He also didn't allow a L-C leadoff hitter to reach base until his final inning of work.
"We know we have a very good young pitcher," Linfield coach Scott Carnahan said. "He started for us last year. His big asset is that he is able to throw to both sides of plate and get his changeup over for strikes."
The credit for Linfield's victory can't be simply given to Rasmussen. L-C's porous defense and sometimes wild pitching certainly added to the cause. The Warriors committed four errors, three coming in the Wildcats' three-run fifth inning.
Greg Rainka led off that inning by reaching first base on shortstop Derek Bruce's fielding error then advanced to second on pitcher Clay errant pickoff throw. After getting the next two batters to ground out, Clay Johnson gave up an RBI infield hit to Joe Fisher, who then advanced another base after a second Bruce error. Linfield went on to score two more runs in the inning.
All told, Johnson's performance was one of the lone bright spots for L-C. The University of Washington transfer gave up four hits and three unearned runs in five innings of work.
The next two Warrior pitchers -- Ryan Heil and Ben Newton -- each couldn't finish an inning of work. Heil gave up two runs in the sixth and Newton four runs in Linfield six-run seventh inning.
"It's easy to be critical of certain players," Cheff said, "but I am not going to do that. This is not the first time we've got our butts beat."
