Warriors prevail in 10 innings

Once darkness fell on Harris Field on Thursday, the Lewis-Clark State baseball team mustered a handful of spotlight-worthy moments. Derek Bruce and Josh Celigoy both lashed flabbergasting home runs, and Jose Rodriguez came up with every player's batting-cage fantasy -- a game-winning hit in extra innings.

L-C coach Ed Cheff was just left wondering why those performances didn't come in the daylight.

Despite getting no-hit for 5l innings and trailing by a run entering the ninth, the Warriors unveiled some late magic and beat Oregon Tech 3-2 in 10 innings. It was the third and final game during the opening day of LCSC's Guardian Tournament.

Earlier Thursday, British Columbia beat Northwest Nazarene 8-7, then NNU defeated Oregon Tech 9-7.

With one out and on a 2-2 pitch, Celigoy clobbered a solo homer to left-center in the ninth. That tied the game at 2-all.

To lead off the 10th, L-C pinch-hitter Billy Steverman cranked a hard single up the middle. A well-placed bunt by Anthony Slagle and an intentional walk to Brandon Morris put runners on first and second.

Then, with two outs, Rodriguez plunked a mellow liner to right. It made an odd sideways bounce once it hit the grass, and Oregon Tech right fielder Charlie Jensen slipped while in pursuit. Nicolas Benton, pinch-running for Steverman, scored easily the winning run.

Rodriguez said that, during batting practices, he often visualizes the sort of pressure situation he faced in the 10th.

"That pretty much is what was going through my head," said the senior infielder from Colton, Calif. "I was just thinking, This is what you live for, this is what you live for. And it happened."

With his cleverly placed forkball, Jesse Guthrie, the Owls' starting pitcher, kept LCSC quiet during the early innings. OIT turned a double play to end the second and, with men on first and second, Guthrie struck out Bruce to escape the third.

But Bruce, the Lewiston native who transferred from Washington State during the offseason, got his revenge. His sixth-inning solo homer -- a rising blow to left that pinged off a light pole -- was the first hit Guthrie allowed.

"I think we put a lot of pressure on ourselves when we saw the no hits up there," Rodriguez said. "And then when Derek got the hit, it kind of took a little pressure off our shoulders, and we got it going after that."

But Cheff asked why his team didn't respond earlier.

"You would like to think about the fifth inning that we would know it was a good game," he said. "It didn't look like we recognized, did it?

"We've got to really get some things figured out offensively. We're not very good right now."

Guthrie, who went 6l innings, allowed only Bruce's homer while walking five and striking out three. The 205-pound righty hadn't pitched since losing to Chico State on Feb. 1.

"He was on today," Owls assistant coach Joey Ordonez said. "I've never seen him throw like this before."

The Warriors' pitchers were likewise stout. Starter Rob Williams allowed three hits over five innings, and Ryan Heil kept Oregon Tech hitless during his 4l-inning stint.

In the top of the 10th, Ben Newton replaced Heil with two outs. After falling into a 3-0 hole to Patrick Johnson, Newton fought back to a full count, then froze Johnson with a third-strike changeup.

LCSC improved to 7-1 while Oregon Tech slipped to 1-7.

NOTES -- Owls head coach Pete Whisler wasn't with his team Thursday. His wife was in the hospital with an appendix condition, so he stayed in Klamath Falls. "He might be here tomorrow," Ordonez said. ... The Warriors will play two games during today's session. They'll play Northwest Nazarene at 1 p.m. and British Columbia at 4 p.m.
