L-C batters managed to outscore Bellevue 16-2 with only nine hits in a college baseball contest Tuesday afternoon at Harris Field. The Warriors exploited the Bruin pitchers' apparent command deficiencies by drawing 14 walks.
Bellevue also committed five errors in the first of a six-game series between these clubs.
Meanwhile, Warrior pitchers Salvador Aguilar and Ben Newton were much better than the L-C offense needed them to be.
Aguilar gave up one hit, no walks and one run in six innings, striking out six of 19 batters. Newton allowed another run on three hits and a walk in the final three innings.
Bellevue starter Ian Hagan was pounded for six runs in 33 innings. Hagan, who gave up four walks and six hits, was replaced by four relievers who walked 10 batters and gave up 13 runs over the next 2l innings.
Former Lewiston High standout Derek Bruce lost his 13-game hitting in the midst of the Warriors' offensive outburst. He went 0-for-4 with an RBI.
Anthony Slagle had only one hit but led the Warriors with three RBI. One of those came in L-C's eight-run sixth, when he was hit by a pitch from Bellevue's Jordan Holloway with the bases loaded. Slagle was beaned twice.
In that sixth, Ryan Stevenson added a bases-loaded, two run double off of Holloway. Holloway gave up five earned runs without recording an out.
L-C and Bellevue resume their series today at 4 p.m. at Harris Field.
