Former Lewis-Clark State players featured in this weekend’s Braves vs.  Red Sox series

This weekends series between the Atlanta Braves and the Boston Red Sox, May 20-22, 2005, should feature two of Lewis-Clark State College Warriors former featured pitchers, the Brave’s John Foster and the Red Sox’s Keith Foulke.  Both pitchers were coached by National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) legendary baseball coach Ed Cheff.

Coach Cheff entered the 2005 season at L-C with an overall coaching record of 1,407 wins to 381 defeats, winning an impressive 78% of his games.  He has coached the L-C Warriors for 29 years.  Cheff has won 13 national titles, been named NAIA Coach of the Year 7 times, and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of fame in 1994.  His most recent accomplishment was his election for induction into the American Baseball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame in the spring of 2005.

Atlanta Braves John Foster played at LCSC in 1999 and won a national championship.  While at L-C, Foster had a 7-3 record appearing in 17 games.  He struck-out 94 batters and walked 40, combining an ERA of 3.72 in 87 innings pitched.  Foster threw a complete game no-hitter against Cal-State Los Angeles on February 19, 1999.  Fosters MLB career includes 5 appearances for the Braves in 2002 and 23 games for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2003.  This season he has pitched in nine games for the Braves.

Boston Red Sox Keith Foulke played at LCSC in 1994.  His one-year Warrior career statistics include 111 innings pitched, while tossing six complete games.  His record was 10-3 with a 2.59 ERA.  He struck-out 94 batters and walked 30, an amazing 3/1 strikeout to walk ratio, while limiting his opponents to a .232 batting average.  Foulke is ranked 23^rd overall on most L-C wins in a season, 9^th in most strikeouts by a pitcher in a season, and 7^th in number of innings pitched in a season.  Foulke started his major-league career with the Chicago White Sox in 1997.  He has pitched for the White Sox, San Francisco Giants, Oakland A’s, and the Boston Red Sox.  Foulke was instrumental in leading the Red Sox to the 2004 World Series championship.

Lewis-Clark State College is located in Lewiston, Idaho, and is home to the 2005 Avista NAIA World Series.  Hosted annually by L-C over memorial weekend, the series draws the top 10 teams in the NAIA ranks to meet for a double elimination tournament.  Find out more about the 2005 Avista NAIA World Series by visiting our website at www.naiaworldseries.com.
