Lewis-Clark State couldn't quite escape an early-inning deficit, losing 11-9 to Portland on Sunday afternoon at Harris Field in the final game of the 50th annual Banana Belt Tournament.

The Pilots scored seven times over the first two innings and, after L-C rallied to within one run, tacked on three more in the fourth.

Although the outcome left the Warriors, 8-4 overall, with their first two-game losing streak of the season, it proved insignificant so far as the tournament results. Washington State clinched the title with Saturday's 9-7 victory over L-C.

WSU went 3-1 in BBT games; L-C, Portland, and Gonzaga all finished with 2-2 marks; and Utah Valley State went 1-3.

Portland, 6-8 overall, scored five times on five hits in the bottom of the first, including a two-run double by Justin Pierce and an RBI single by Andrew Wrisley. A sacrifice fly by Riley Snell ended the day for L-C starter Brad Davis (0-1).

Adam Kerr belted a two-run homer in the second, putting the Pilots up 7-4.

L-C scored twice in each of the first three innings, but left a runner in scoring position on each occasion.

Portland got three runs on as many hits and an error in the fourth.

The Warriors put together their best offensive burst in the eighth, scoring three times on three hits, among them Brandon Morris' two-run double. But they stranded two more baserunners, giving them 12 for the game.

Chris Siegfried (1-1), the second of four Portland pitchers, collected the victory for three shutout innings, during which he allowed two hits and three walks while striking out one.

Pierce and Wrisley both had four hits for the Pilots, who finished with 15.

The Warriors amassed 10 hits, including three from Joey Dyche, who pushed his hitting streak to 10 games.

L-C plays host to Western Baptist in a three-game series at Harris Field beginning Friday.
