Although Joey Dyche's hitting streak came
to an end, the Lewis-Clark State baseball team
was otherwise successful in the opener of its
weeklong homestand on Monday night.
Brandon Morris rang up five RBI to lead the
Warriors to an 11-4 victory over California
Baptist at Harris Field. It was LCSC's eighth
consecutive win.
L-C, which will play every day this week,
used a preplanned split of three pitchers, with
each working three innings. Ben Newton, who
allowed two hits while striking out four, was
awarded his first win of the season.
Newton has allowed no earned runs in eight
total innings this season.
Dyche, who had hit safely in 16 consecutive
games, went 0-for-3. In the ninth with Warriors
on third and second, the visitors from
Riverside, Calif., intentionally walked Dyche,
thus denying him a chance to extend his streak.
Dyche, a right-handed junior transfer, leads
the Warriors with a .479 batting average.
Morris took care of the offense in this game,
smashing a three-run homer to left in the third.
Before Morris' blast, the Warriors had been down
2-1.
Morris, who leads the team with seven homers,
added an RBI double in the sixth and a
run-scoring sacrifice in the eighth. Allen
Balmer also smacked a two-run single in the
eighth.
The Warriors (16-4) and Lancers (8-12-1) will
play at 6 p.m. today, Wednesday and Thursday.
After this series, the Warriors have a
three-game set scheduled with St. Martin's.
