Weilep took a no-hitter into the seventh
inning and ended up pitching Lewis-Clark
State's first complete game of the
season as the Warriors edged Saint
Martin's 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at
Harris Field. L-C completed the
three-game sweep of the Saints to move
to 15-3. The Warriors start another
series today, playing host to Westmont
at 3 p.m. Weilep (2-0) ultimately
allowed four hits while striking out
eight and walking one. The junior
right-hander's no-hit bid was dashed by
pinch-hitter Maki Smith, who led off the
seventh with a bloop single to right
field. Smith ended up scoring on an RBI
single by Ezzard Wilkins.
The Warriors, who got a two-run
double by Jose Castenon in the third,
added their other run in the eighth.
L-C, which had a single, a walk and a
plunked batter in the inning, picked up
the run courtesy of a passed ball.
A leadoff double by Nate Baker and
L-C's third error of the game -- Saint
Martin's likewise had three errors --
produced a run in the ninth. The
subsequent batter, Richard O'Neill,
drove a fly to deep right field, and the
baserunner, Vince Maughan, apparently
presumed it was beyond the reach of
right fielder Jessie Roehl.
Roehl, however, made the retreating
catch, then doubled Maughan off first to
end the game.
Castenon, who made his season debut
this weekend, had two hits, as did Matt
Vogel and Juan Verdejo. The Warriors
finished with nine hits, while Saint
Martin's (4-11) had four. |
