VANCOUVER,
British Columbia -- Pinch hits by Nick
Currin and Dan Morrow keyed Lewis-Clark
State's three-run eighth inning, and the
Warriors subdued British Columbia 7-5 on
Tuesday night in a pairing of
NAIA Region I heavyweights. The Warriors,
playing their first game of the season away
from Lewiston, won their eighth straight to
improve to 19-3. British Columbia is 18-7
after having a 14-game winning streak
snapped. Although L-C dodged a potential
disaster in the sixth, as reliever Austin
Weilep struck out Adam Campbell to leave the
bases loaded, the Thunderbirds still scored
a run to break a 5-all tie.
It remained that way until the eighth.
Jessie Roehl started things with his fourth
hit of the game, a one-out single, and Zach
Evangelho followed in kind. Currin was then
called on to pinch hit for Paul Martin, and
the senior doubled down the left-field line
to tie it at 6.
After Joey Benda was summoned from the
bullpen to relieve Brendan Rolfe, the
Warriors opted to have Dan Morrow hit for
Antoine McLeod. Morrow, whose pinch-hit RBI
double in the ninth against Westmont last
Tuesday tied a game L-C eventually won 6-5,
singled up the middle to drive in two.
Weilep (3-0) allowed only a walk in the
final two innings to pocket the victory.
He and starter Chris Kissock together
allowed seven hits while striking out seven.
They also walked seven, the highest amount
L-C has issued in a game this year.
The Warriors, who in the fourth scored
three times on two hits, an error, a plunked
batter and a bases-loaded walk, stranded
nine baserunners and hit into three double
plays.
UBC starter Jonathan Forest was pulled in
the fourth following a walk-wild pitch-walk
sequence.
L-C played without regulars D.J. Kooken
and Justin Fuller, who were sidelined
because of illness. |
