Warriors cap sweep with rout

Methodical and
opportunistic in Sunday's first game,
Lewis-Clark State turned dynamic in the second.
And D.J. Kooken directed the change of pace.
Kooken had five hits, including two home runs,
and rang up five RBI in the Warriors' 20-1
humbling of Eastern Oregon in the nightcap of an
afternoon doubleheader at Harris Field.
In the earlier game, a three-RBI performance by
Matt Vogel and two run-scoring wild pitches led
to a 5-1 L-C victory. With their 11th straight
win, the top-ranked Warriors move to 22-3.
Eastern Oregon drops to 8-14. L-C reaped its
biggest offensive outburst of the season in the
second game of the doubleheader, scheduled
because of a Saturday rainout. Twelve Warriors
combined on 18 hits, with Jessie Mier and Bryson
Tajiri adding three RBI apiece.
Kooken, who had a two-run double in L-C's
five-run first inning, smacked a solo homer to
left in the Warrior second, which featured
another five-run flurry. He added a two-run shot
to center in L-C's most significant rally of the
day, an eight-run seventh, giving him a
team-high three home runs for the season.
Mier cracked his first homer of the spring, a
two-run drive to left in the sixth.
Four Warrior pitchers teamed on a
four-hitter. Starter Max Hibbs (3-1) worked five
shutout innings, yielding a hit and a walk while
striking out four.
Paul Martin had three of the Warriors' 11
hits in the opener, while Vogel smacked his
first home run of the season, a solo shot to
left-center in the third inning.
Vogel also had a sacrifice fly in the fifth
and an RBI fielder's choice in the seventh while
scoring on a wild pitch in the first.
Starter Jason Garcia (3-0) pitched into the
seventh inning. The senior right-hander allowed
a run on seven hits while striking out two.
The Warriors play five times at Harris Field
this week, beginning Tuesday night with a game
against Whitworth. They then play host to
Concordia in a weekend series. |
