Combined shutout pitching hands Warriors a 7-0 win

2-16-08

LEWISTON, Idaho – Three Warriors combined for 13 strikeouts in Lewis-Clark State College’s 7-0 win over Whitworth University on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Harris Field in the second day of the Regence BlueShield of Idaho Tournament.

Michael Guerrero (shown left), in his first start of the season for the Warriors, went five innings striking out six, walking none, and giving up only one hit to earn his first win.

Guerrero was backed by the equally impressive efforts of Brian Bird and Matt Stabelfeld out of the bullpen. Bird picked up where Guerrero left off, and struck out three Whitworth batters and gave up only one hit in two innings of work. Stabelfeld then closed out the final two innings, striking out four and allowing only one hit.

Guerrero struck out the side in the second inning, and Stabelfeld matched that feat in the eighth.

This win comes after an 8-3 win over College of Idaho on Friday, and improves LCSC’s overall record to 5-1. The Warriors one loss on the season came against Whitworth last weekend by a score of 6-5. This loss was actually the first time the Warriors had fallen to the Pirates since 1999.

Lewis-Clark State quickly jumped on Pirate pitcher, and Lewiston native, Collin Gibbs. Warrior center-fielder Nic Benton lined Gibbs’ two-one pitch into the gap in left-center to lead-off the game with a triple. Ricky Reavis and Brent Wyatt then followed with back-to-back singles to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Zach Adam, hitting as the designated hitter, connected for a two-out, bases clearing, three-run triple in the bottom of the third and expanded L-C’s lead to 5-0.

The Warriors then added two more runs in the eighth off of a two-run single by Benton.

Benton, Reavis, Wyatt, and Ryan Anderson all finished with two hits on the day. Anderson had both a triple in the second inning, and a double in the sixth. LCSC compiled 11 hits in total.

In the first game on Saturday, the College of Idaho collected 16 hits in their 10-4 win over Mayville State.

The final game of the day featured a Mayville State 5-3 win over Whitworth. The loss drops Whitworth to 1-5 on the season and gives them a final Regence BlueShield of Idaho tournament record of 0-2.

On Sunday the Warriors are set to face Mayville State at 10 a.m., and College of Idaho at 1 p.m. to finish out the tournament. Mayville State will be only the third team the Warriors have faced so far this year. LCSC has gone 3-0 against College of Idaho and 2-1 against Whitworth to begin the season.
