LCSC sweeps twinbill from
British Columbia 13-9 and
8-6
04-26-08
VANCOUVER,
British Columbia - The
Lewis-Clark State College
baseball team took two
different routes on
Saturday, but the results
were the same as the
Warriors swept a
doubleheader from the
University of British
Columbia by scores of 13-9
and 8-6 at Nat Bailey
Stadium.
In the opener, the Warriors
used a 10-run fifth inning
to jump out to a 13-0 lead,
but had to survive a
nine-run seventh inning by
UBC, the largest inning
against LCSC this season, to
claim the win.
In the second game, British
Columbia scored twice in the
bottom of the eighth to tie
the contest at 5-5, but the
Warriors rallied for three
runs in the top of the ninth
inning to capture their 14th
consecutive victory.
The Warriors, 44-4 overall,
are now 8-0 against UBC this
season. The Thunderbirds
fall to 22-21 on the year.
Despite 27 hits in the
opening game and 26 in the
second game, the two teams
combined for only eight
extra-base hits on the day,
all doubles.
In the opener, Ricky Reavis'
RBI groundout in the second
inning made it 1-0 before
the Warriors erupted in the
fifth by sending 16 batters
to the plate and collecting
eight hits. LCSC also
benefited from four walks
and a hit batter. Sean
Halton (shown above) drove
in the first run of the
inning with a single and
added a two-run single in
his second at bat. Brent
Wyatt and Reavis both
singled in a run and then
walked with the bases loaded
two drive in two runs apiece
in the inning, while Brian
Ward had a two-run single.
Ikaika Lester had the other
RBI of the inning with a
single.
Mike Rivera and Wyatt added
RBI singles in the seventh
to make it 13-0.
The Warrior pitching staff
had been able to get out of
jams until the seventh
inning. Ryan Woods gave up
five hits and three walks in
four innings of work, but
didn't allow a run. Matt
Stabelfeld also kept UBC at
bay because the Thunderbirds
stranded nine on base
through six innings.
UBC got to Stabelfeld and
then Kevin Camacho for the
big inning. The Thunderbirds
collected six hits and used
three walks and a hit batter
to do their damage. Justin
Mace, the third LCSC pitcher
in the inning, came on to
get the final out and then
went the rest of the way to
earn the save. Despite
allowing four hits, four
walks, and six runs in 2.2
innings, Stabelfeld earned
the win.
Halton led LCSC with a
3-for-3 performance at the
plate with three RBI and
three runs scored. Wyatt
went 2-for-4 with three RBI,
while Rivera went 3-for-5
with two RBI.
The second game was more of
a back-and-forth contest as
UBC scored a run in the
bottom of the first, and
LCSC countered with three
runs in the top of the
third. Josh Ashenbrenner
started the rally with a
single and Rivera added a
one-out single. An error
allowed Ashenbrenner to
score and Wyatt to reach
base. Kyle Green then added
a two-run single.
After UBC tied the game in
the bottom of the third with
two runs, LCSC took a 4-3
lead in the fourth. Halton
started the rally with a
single and raced to third on
a double by Lester.
Ashenbrenner then grounded
out to short, but Halton
scored on the play.
LCSC added another run in
the seventh on a sacrifice
fly by Greene for a 5-3
advantage, but UBC used four
consecutive singles of LCSC
reliever Tyler Knigge in the
bottom of the eighth to knot
the contest.
Nic Benton started the rally
with a walk, and with two
outs he stole second. Greene
then doubled him in and Ward
followed with an RBI single.
Halton then doubled in Ward
to make it 8-5.
In the bottom of the ninth,
UBC used two singles and hit
batter to load the bases
with no outs. A walk then
forced in a run, and Dustin
Willis came on in relief of
Knigge. Willis got Alex
White to fly out to LCSC
right fielder Justin Speer,
who then made the play of
the game by throwing out a
baserunner at home plate.
Willis then got a ground out
to end the game.
Despite the rough outing
which saw him give up six
hits and three runs in just
one inning, Knigge earned
the win. Michael Guerrero
pitched the first seven
innings and allowed three
runs on nine hits. He struck
out seven.
Greene finished the game
2-for-4 with four RBI, while
Halton collected three hits.
Halton finished the day
6-for-8 with four RBI and
four runs scored.
The two teams wrap up the
four-game series with a
single game at noon on
Sunday.
