Pitching helps LCSC shut out
Whitworth 5-0
4-16-08
Kevin Camacho and Matt
Stabelfeld combined on a
three hitter and struck out
15 batters to help the
Lewis-Clark State College
baseball team defeat
Whitworth 5-0 at LCSC’s
Harris Field on Wednesday
night.
The win was the seventh
straight for the Warriors,
36-4 overall, while
Whitworth dropped its ninth
straight game to fall to
11-24. It was also the
seventh shutout posted by
the Warrior pitching staff
this season.
Camacho and Stabelfeld came
up one strikeout short of
tying the season high of 16
posted by the Warrior
pitching staff in a game.
Also, the two had a combined
one-hitter until Whitworth
picked up back-to-back
singles with two outs in the
top of the ninth inning.
Prior to that, Whitworth’s
only hit was in the fourth
inning when Chad Flett
singled between short and
third. He did the same thing
for Whitworth’s first hit in
the ninth inning, while
Billy Rigsby also had a
single in the ninth.
Camacho, who moved to 2-1 on
the season, pitched six
strong inning and struck out
a season-high 10. In his
longest outing of the
season, he didn’t allow a
walk, but did hit two
batters. Stabelfeld pitched
the final three innings and
struck out five. He also
walked one.
The Warriors collected 13
hits at the plate with Kyle
Greene again leading the way
with three. Paul Martin,
Sean Halton, and Bernard
Pena added two apiece, and
Halton also drove in two
runs.
LCSC picked up its first run
in the bottom of the first
inning when Greene and
Halton hit back-to-back
doubles to left-center
field.
In the third, Paul Martin
started the Warrior rally
with a single and then went
to third on a single by
Greene. On that play,
Whitworth tried to get
Martin at third, but the
relay throw was wide at
third. The errant throw
allowed Martin to score and
Greene to eventually reach
third. Greene later scored
on a single by Bernard
Pena.
Halton picked up his second
RBI in the fourth inning
when Martin singled with two
outs and Greene was hit by a
pitch. Halton then singled
to right to score Martin.
Greene continued his season
tear by blasting his 15th
home run of the season, a
solo shot over the center
field fence in the sixth
inning, to complete the
scoring. Greene finished
3-for-4 in the contest to up
his season batting average
to .469. Greene, who was
making his first start of
the season at third base
because of an injury to
Ikaika Lester, had three
hits in a game for the
eighth time this season.
Whitworth starter Nathan
Johnson took the loss to
fall to 2-4. He allowed
seven hits, four runs, and
three walks in four innings.
John Hauck pitched the final
four innings and allowed six
hits and one run.
The two teams meet are
playing a home-and-home
series and play again on
Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in
Spokane.
LCSC will then return home
to face Corban College in a
three-game series. The first
game is Friday at 6:30 p.m.,
and then the two will meet
in a doubleheader on
Saturday at noon.
