UW handcuffs
LCSC with 6-2 triumph
05-20-08
SEATTLE -- Four
University of Washington
pitchers combined on a
five-hitter and the
Lewis-Clark State
College baseball team
lost by more than one
run for the first time
this season in a 6-2
setback to the Huskies
in the regular-season
finale for the Warriors
on Tuesday night.
LCSC, 53-6 overall,
suffered one-run losses
in its previous five
setbacks. It also was
LCSC's first loss to
NCAA Division I team
this season, leaving the
Warriors 3-1 against
such schools, including
a 1-1 mark against the
Huskies.
The timing of the game
wasn't in LCSC's favor
with the start of the
52nd annual Avista NAIA
World Series on Friday.
But a previous meeting
was postponed and
because UW likes to play
home games on Tuesday
evenings, the was the
only date available. UW
also is only one of two
NCAA schools (Gonzaga is
the other) that agreed
to play the Warriors
this season.
LCSC struggled at the
plate Tuesday as its hit
total was the second
lowest of the season.
Sean Halton had two
hits, including a solo
home run, but the rest
of the lineup was a
combined 3-of-28.
Halton's fifth home run
of the season, a shot to
left center, put LCSC
ahead 1-0 in the second
inning, but the Huskies,
32-20 overall, answered
with solo runs in the
second and third innings
for a 2-1 lead. Sean
Meehan's RBI single tied
the game, and then Kyle
Conley hit his 18th home
run of the season an
inning later to put the
Huskies ahead.
The Huskies added two
more in the fifth on a
two-out bases-loaded
single by Troy Scott.
LCSC cut the margin to
4-2 in the top of the
seventh when Josh
Ashenbrenner singled,
Mickey Pingree was hit
by a pinch, and Nic
Benton moved them up a
base with a sacrifice
bunt. Brent Wyatt then
grounded out to second
to score Ashenbrenner.
The Huskies, however,
answered with two in the
bottom of the inning
when Bradley Boyer hit a
solo home run, while two
wild pitches allowed the
final run to score.
UW sophomore starter Cam
Nobles (5-4) allowed
just one hit, a solo
homer, over his five
innings for the win. He
walked two and struck
out three. Relievers
Paul Dickey, Geoff
Brown, and Brian Pearl
held the Warriors to one
run over the final four
innings.
The Warriors also used
four pitchers and
limited their use to
keep them fresh for the
series. Ryan Woods went
the first two innings
and allowed two hits and
a run with one walk and
four strikeouts. Matt
Stabelfeld allowed four
hits and three runs in
three innings, and wound
up taking the loss. Nick
Masters gave up two
runs, two hits, and two
walks in 1.2 innings of
work, while Tyler Knigge
allowed one hit over the
final 1.1 innings.
The win allowed the
Huskies to avenge an 8-6
setback to LCSC back on
Feb. 27.
LCSC opens play in the
Avista NAIA World Series
on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
against Embry-Riddle
University of Daytona
Beach, Fla.
