Warriors defeat
Concordia on Greene's
home run in 10th inning
LEWISTON, Idaho -
Lewis-Clark State College
pitchers struck out a
season-high 16 batters, but
it took a solo home run from
Kyle Greene to lead off the
bottom of the 10th inning to
stretch the Warriors' win
streak to 20 with a 5-4 win
over Concordia at LCSC's
Harris Field on Tuesday
night.
It was only the second time
this season the Warriors
have gone into extra
innings. LCSC, 26-2 and
ranked No. 1 in the NAIA,
suffered its last loss in a
3-2 10-inning setback to the
College of Idaho when a
Warrior outfielder dropped a
fly ball.
Greene put a dramatic end to
Tuesday's ballgame with his
team-leading eighth home
run. Greene, who went
9-for-17 with three home
runs and 10 RBI in a
four-game series against the
University of British
Columbia last weekend, was
2-for-5 on Tuesday and is
hitting .438 on the season,
which leads LCSC regulars.
Greene's home run to
straight away center field
gave the victory to Warrior
reliever Blaine Hardy, who
was simply outstanding. The
junior left-hander from
Shoreline, Wash., pitched
7.1 innings and allowed just
three hits, no runs, and
struck out a season-high
11.
Freshman Tyler Knigge of
Lewiston started for LCSC,
but only made it 2.2
innings. He gave up six hits
and four runs, three of
which were earned, and
struck out five with one
walk. LCSC pitchers had
struck out 13 batters in two
games this season prior to
Tuesday's game.
For one of the rare times
this season, LCSC had to
battle back from behind.
LCSC trailed 4-2 going into
the eighth inning, but
scored twice to eventually
force extra innings.
Concordia, 7-12
overall, jumped out to a 4-0
lead as it scored a single
run in the first inning on a
sacrifice fly, and then
three in the third on four
hits and an error.
LCSC couldn't mount much off
of Concordia starter Ben
Rue, who went four innings
and allowed just three hits
with a strikeout. But he was
replaced by Zac Manor to
start the fifth inning and
the Warriors immediately
went to work.
Ikaika Lester started the
bottom of the fifth with a
single and Mickey Pingree
followed with a walk. Travis
Georgius then singled, but
it turned into a double play
when Pingree was thrown out
at third and then Georgius
was thrown out at second.
Lester managed to score on
the play. Brent Wyatt hit a
two-out double and then
scored on a single by Paul
Martin to cut the margin to
4-2.
LCSC tied it in the eighth
when Brian Ward singled and
was replaced by courtesy
runner Brian Bolwitt. Sean
Halton followed with an RBI
triple and scored on a
single by Lester.
Hardy faced only one batter
over the minimum in the
final five innings, thanks
to picking off a runner and
having a batter thrown out
at second trying to stretch
a single into a double.
Wyatt, Greene, and Lester
had two hits apiece to
combine for half of LCSC's
hit total. It's the 17th
straight game LCSC has
finished with 10 or more
hits, but it ended a streak
of six straight games of
scoring in double figures.
The two teams meet against
Wednesday in a 1 p.m.
doubleheader at Harris
Field.
