The Lewis-Clark State women's cross country team Sunday received an at-large invitation to the NAIA national meet, a day after placing third at the Region 1 meet at Portland, Ore.

The L-C men placed seventh and failed to draw an invitation to Nationals, though top runner Ciprian Nitoi earned a berth by taking fifth.

Taryn Joyce-Mendive of L-C placed 10th in the women's race, and teammate Darrah Hocum was 13th.

In a nonscoring performance, Shannon McKenzie of L-C tried to ignore a painful leg injury and placed 69th.

She had taken a spill Tuesday, suffering an apparent hairline fracture in her fibula. She decided to run anyway, since the fibula is nonweight-bearing.

The Warrior women will make their fifth straight trip to Nationals, scheduled for Nov. 19 at Louisville, Ky.
