LCSC men, women golfers stand in second place

3-19-07

The Lewis-Clark State College men and women’s golf teams both stand in second place after the opening round of the LCSC Invitational held Monday at the Clarkston Golf & Country Club.

The final 18 holes are scheduled to begin Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.

The University of Victoria holds a six-shot lead in the men’s tourney after firing a team score of 294, while LCSC is second at 300. Five golfers play for a team, but only the top four scores each day count toward the team scoring.

Victoria’s Steve Lane carded a 3-under-par 69 to earn first-day medalist honors and was only one of two golfers to break par on the sunny day. The other was LCSC’s Nikolas Arrenbrecht, a sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa, who shot a 70. Teammate Jeff Ray, a junior from Olympia, Wash., matched par at 72.
(Shrout shoots an 81 in Round 1)

On the women’s side, only nine strokes separate the four teams. Rocky Mountain holds the lead at 339, followed by LCSC at 342, Concordia at 345, and Victoria at 348.

Freshman Dianne Alcantara of Rocky Mountain took medalist honors with a 78, and was followed by LCSC’s Cortney Shrout, a freshman from Okanogan, Wash., who fired an 81. Sam Kluever, a junior, had an 83 for LCSC, while Juanita Villa, a sophomore, shot an 85.
