LCSC women’s golf team likely clinches national berth

5-1-07

CHRISTINA LAKE, British Columbia – The Lewis-Clark State College women’s golf team was able to move up a spot in the final day of the Region I Tournament on Tuesday to all but wrap up a berth in the NAIA national tournament.

The news, however, wasn’t as good for the LCSC men’s team, which fell a spot to finish third in the tough region field at Christina Lake Golf Course.

Only the tournament champion earns an automatic berth to nationals, but there are some at-large berths available. The LCSC women, which wound up third at regionials, are ranked No. 12 in the NAIA and in great position to receive one of the at-large berths. The field for the tournament will be announced later this week.

The Warrior men, however, are ranked No. 34 in the country and unless they can move up in the final poll, they won’t qualify for nationals.

The LCSC women stood in fourth place after Monday’s opening 36 holes, but rallied to pass Concordia and nearly catch the University of Victoria for second. The University of British Columbia won with a 940 total, followed by Victoria at 945, and LCSC at 950.

LCSC’s Juanita Villa finished third overall in the tournament with a 229 total after shooting a 75 on Tuesday. Courtney Shrout had a 232 total after an 81 on Tuesday to also make the all-tournament team, which is reserved for the top five finishers. LCSC was the only team with two players on the all-tournament team.

LCSC’s Patrick Casabonne finished tied for fourth on the men’s side at 214 after a 74 on Tuesday to also earn all-tournament honors.

The NAIA women’s national tournament will be held May 15-18 in San Diego. LCSC has qualified for the tournament two years in a row and three of the last four years.
