LCSC’s Villa, Shrout, Lovell, and Thompson
earn FC golf honors

5-17-07

BILLINGS, Mont. – Lewis-Clark State College sophomore Juanita Villa was named the Frontier Conference’s Player of the Year for women’s golf, while Cortney Shrout and Joey Lovell earned freshman honors, and Paul Thompson was named Coach of the Year on the men’s side, conference commissioner Mike Walker announced on Thursday.

The Warriors placed three women on the all-conference first team, while Lovell was the lone member of the men’s team to make first team despite LCSC winning the conference title. Lovell also placed second to Montana Tech’s Bryon Olson in the voting for the Player of the Year award.

The selections were made by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Only LCSC and Rocky Mountain fielded full women’s teams during the year and all five varsity players from both schools either made first or second team. Villa, who is from Medllin, Columbia, was joined by sophomore Samara Kluever of Oconomowoc, Wisc., and Shrout, a freshman from Okanagen, Wash., on the first team. Kara Player, a senior from Gladstone, Australia, and Chantelle Beveridge, a junior from Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, were chosen to the second team.

Three freshmen tied for the Freshman of the Year award as Shrout shares the honor with Rocky Mountain’s Diana Alcantara and Jen Orchard.

On the men’s side, Lovell, who is from Sandpoint, capped a big year with the double honor. He was only one of two freshmen to make either first or second team and won the Freshman of the Year award. He was joined on the first team by two players from both Montana Tech and Rocky Mountain.

Named to the second team from LCSC were Patrick Casabonne, a sophomore from Boise, and Nik Arrenbrecht, a sophomore from Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Warrior men, under Thompson, won the conference title for the second straight year and also were the conference’s top finishing team in the Region I Tournament. LCSC, however, just missed out on an at-large berth to the national tournament.
