Both Warrior golf teams hold second place after day one of the Montana Tech Invitational

9-9-07

FAIRMONT HOT SPRINGS, Mont. -- Both the Lewis-Clark State College men's and women's golf teams stand in second place after the opening 36 holes of the Montana Tech Invitational, which is being played at the Fairmont Hot Springs Golf Course.

The first 36 holes were played on Sunday, with the final 18 holes on Monday. The tournament is the season-opening event in the Frontier Conference.

The Warrior men have a team total of 588, just six shots behind Rocky Mountain College, and one shot ahead of Westminster, which stands third at 589. On the women's side, Rocky has the lead with at 629, while LCSC overcame a slow start to post the best team score of the second round to stand at 655.

Each team in the conference plays host to a 54-hole event and the total team score from each tournament is added to determine the conference champion. Last year, the Warrior men won the conference title, while the women finished second to Rocky Mountain.

Nik Arrenbrecht led the Warrior men on Sunday with rounds of 74 and 70 for a 144 total. That leaves him five shots behind the individual leader. Chris Kneen, a freshman, had a 147, while Joey Lovell had a 149. Lovell was 2-under on his second 18 with three holes to play, but finished with a pair of double bogeys along with a bogey.

"We played well but these greens are very difficult to putt and we had some problems putting," Thompson said.

The Warrior women shaved 19 shots off the first round with a 318 total on the second 18, beating Rocky Mountain by a stroke.

Freshman Alana Norris led the Warriors with rounds of 83 and 75 for a 158 total.
