LCSC golf teams place fourth and fifth at regionals

COEUR D’ALENE – The Lewis-Clark State College men’s and women’s golf teams failed to pick up any ground in the final round of the NAIA Region I Tournament and finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively, on Tuesday. 

Both teams will now be at the mercy of the NAIA raters, who will determine the final poll and the order of the at-larger berths.  

The Warrior men, who were No. 30 in the NAIA poll under receiving votes entering the tournament, did finish ahead of No. 19 Concordia in the meet. No. 3-ranked University of British Columbia won the title with 840 strokes, which was 24 under par, while No. 8 Victoria was second at 878. Rocky Mountain was third at 891, followed by LCSC at 902 and Concordia at 907 in the 12-team tournament. 

LCSC senior Jeff Ray fired a 77 on Tuesday to finished the 54-hole event at 5-over-par 221, which tied him for seventh place overall. Freshman Chris Kneen had a 75 for 225 total, while Nik Arrenbrecht had a 73 and finished at 226. Kneen was 14th overall, while Arrenbrecht tied for 15th. 

The Warrior women are in better shape for an at-large berth, based on being ranked No. 17 heading into the tournament. UBC, ranked No. 4, won the team title at 936, while Rocky Mountain, ranked 10th, was second at 106. Concordia, ranked No. 19, improved its standing, by finishing third at 981, while Victoria, No. 16, was fourth at 984. LCSC was fifth at 1,013. 

The Warriors, who had their best round on Tuesday with a 335 total, were led by seventh-place finisher Juanita Villa. The junior had her second straight 79 for a 242 total. Teammate Cortney Shrout was next at 254, while Alana Norris had a 258. 

The final NAIA rankings will come out on Friday.

Team scoring – British Columbia 936, Rocky Mountain 970, Concordia 981, Victoria 984, LCSC 1013, Carroll 1080, Northwest Christian College 1165, Corban 1233, Montana State-Northern 1283.

Medalist – Kaitlin Troop, UBC, 226.

LCSC finishers – 7, Juanita Villa 242. T 20, Cortney Shrout 254. T 25, Alana Norris 258. 27, Samara Kluever 259, T, 28, Sue James 264, 30, Nicole Fisher 267, 32, Jordan Knapp 274.

MEN

Team scoring – British Columbia 840, Victoria 878, Rocky Mountain 891, Lewis-Clark State 902, Concordia 907, Corban 926, Montana Tech 935, Northwest Christian 948, Westminster 950, Carroll 956, College of Idaho 1017, Great Falls 1046.

Medalist – Blake Rowe-Sleeman, UBC, 204.
