LCSC
women's golf team stands tied for 19th
SAN
DIEGO, Calif. - The Lewis-Clark State College
women's golf team made a small improvement
during the second day of the NAIA Women's Golf
Championships on Tuesday at the Lake San Marcos
Country Club.
The problem for the
others several other teams in the field played
better in the second round than on Monday.
Despite shooting
two strokes better on Tuesday, the Warriors
actually slipped into a tie for 19th place at
the tournament's halfway point.
LCSC shot a 342
score on Tuesday, which left it with a 686 total
and tied for 19th in the 23-team field with St.
Ambrose. The Warriors are still in good shape to
make a run as they are only 12 shots out of 15th
place and 22 shots behind fellow Frontier
Conference competitor Rocky Mountain, which is
in 14th at 664. Fellow Region I member, the
University of British Columbia, leads the
tournament with a 630 score.
For the Warriors to
make a move, they will need their top players to
come through, something that didn't happen on
Tuesday.
Juanita Villa, who
was the conference's Player of the Year last
season and the Warriors' top scorer in almost
every tournament this year, bogeyed seven
straight holes on her first nine Tuesday on her
way to a 15-over 87 and a tow-day total of 172,
which leaves her third on the team.
Sophomore Cortney
Shrout continues to play well for LCSC and
followed up her 80 on Monday with an 83. Her 163
total has her tied for 38th overall.
Freshman Alana
Norris improved by one shot on Tuesday with an
85 for a 171 total, which has her tied for 74th
overall. Sophomore Sue James is tied for 100th
at 180 after improving by six shots on Tuesday
with an 87.
Senior Samara
Kluever, who is appearing in her fourth NAIA
national tournament, struggled for the second
straight day and finished with a 96 for a 191
total.
The third round of
the tournament will be held Thursday with the
final 18 holes on Friday. LCSC, which is making
its fourth appearance in the tournament in the
last five years, finished 14th last season.
