LCSC signs first women’s track recruit for next season

05-01-08

The Lewis-Clark State College women’s track program has signed its first 2008 recruit to a letter-of-intent as Kirsten Smith, a senior at Everett High School in Washington, will throw for the Warriors next year, LCSC coach Mike Collins has announced.

Smith competes in the javelin, shot put and discus at Everett and has expressed an interest in learning to throw the hammer, Collins said.

Smith is currently ranked No. 5 in the shot put, No. 13 in the discus, and No. 32 in the javelin among high school competitors in Washington, according to Athletic.net, one of the premier online track and field and cross country results websites.  Among Washington Class 3A schools she is ranked second in both the shot put and discus, and ninth in the javelin.

“All of her marks are just short of the current NAIA standards at the collegiate level to qualify for the outdoor national championships,” LCSC coach Mike Collins said, adding he thinks it won’t take too long before Smith is exceeding these standards once she begins her lifting and training routine at LCSC.

“She has a great attitude and work ethic and is very excited about being a part of building a tradition and what it means to be a Warrior thrower,” Collins said.
