Warrior cross country teams
run well in season opener

WALLA – The Lewis-Clark
State College cross country
teams missed taking first
for both the men and women
by only two points, as the
women’s team ran away with
the title, but the men’s
team, despite having the No.
1 finisher in Adrian Ramirez
(left), was narrowly
defeated by Whitworth
University.
LCSC coach
Mike Collins was very
pleased with the way both
his teams performed at the
Whitman Invitational, “I am
ecstatic with the results,”
he said. “Both teams
surpassed my optimistic
outlook for the day in ways
that I could not even
imagine.”
The men’s
team saw five of its runners
finish in the top ten, but
was highlighted by Ramirez
who won the individual title
as he finished the
6-kilometer course in a
record time of 19:26, more
than 13 seconds ahead of his
nearest competitor.
Ramirez’s time topped the
previous record of 19:29 set
last season by former L-C
runner, and current
assistant coach, Calin
Hantau.
The Warrior
women were led by freshman
Stephanie Shuel, but it was
a total team effort that won
them the title. Shuel’s time
of 15:04 on the 4K race was
good enough for third, and
because eight other Warriors
finished less than a minute
behind her, the women’s team
score of 36 was well ahead
of Whitworth’s second place
total of 45.
The LCSC men
and women, currently ranked
No. 12 and No. 14 in the
nation respectively, now
look ahead to their next
meet on Sept. 20 in Boise.
