HELENA, Mont. -- In a hostile environment for the first time in more than a month, the Lewis-Clark State men's basketball team continued its impressive run of success. And the Warriors are beginning to enter uncharted territory.
Tenth-ranked LCSC got key buckets from Joey Ray and Martin Brothers down the stretch, as the Warriors outlasted No. 16 Carroll College 71-69 on Thursday night. It was their 11th straight victory, which ties the school record.
L-C improved to 18-2 overall and 3-0 in the Frontier Conference. Even though the league season is just beginning, this could turn out to be a pivotal decision.
"This kind of thing give you better control of your destiny," Warriors coach George Pfeifer said. "There aren't going to be very many people who come through this gym and win."
In a game that was tight throughout, Ray's 3-pointer with 2:19 remaining put L-C up by five. A minute later, Brothers tipped in a Ray miss to make it a six-point lead.
The Saints' Greg Johnson answered with his only field goal of the evening -- a 3-pointer that made it 71-68. Johnson added one free throw with 26 seconds left to cut the margin to two.
Carroll (14-3, 1-1) got the ball back and had a sideline throw-in. There was a scramble for the ball, and the Saints' Randy Ranalli came up with it. His desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer didn't touch the rim.
Brothers, a reserve forward who has put up big numbers as of late, scored 13 points and snatched seven rebounds. Dustin Endsley tallied 13 points and eight boards while Danny Allen recorded 10 points.
The Warriors had a difficult night at the foul line, making 9 of 18 attempts. That blotted out their 49.1-percent showing from the field and their 50-percent clip from 3.
L-C opened the game with an 11-2 lead. Although Carroll eventually roared ahead -- the Saints were up by seven late in the first half -- Pfeifer said the early flurry was helpful.
"We kind of drowned the crowd out," he said. "It was a packed-up house."
