HAVRE, Mont. -- While a penchant for fouling nearly did in the Lewis-Clark State Warriors, their unbelievably hot shooting touch offered salvation.
L-C didn't miss many shots, and Joey Ray didn't miss at all down the stretch, as the Warriors subdued Montana State-Northern 114-109 in overtime in a Frontier Conference men's basketball game Friday night.
Ray scored a career-high 28 points and, according to L-C coach George Pfeifer, buried every field goal and free throw he hoisted in the last few minutes of regulation and all of overtime.
"It was a special night for us offensively," said Pfeifer, whose team made 61 percent (41-for-67) of its floor attempts plus 23 of 28 free throws.
And it had to be. MSU-Northern exploited L-C's 34 fouls to the tune of 46 free throws, although the Lights only made 27. They also shot respectively from the field, 49 percent.
One Warrior personal proved quite costly. With less than 10 seconds left in regulation and L-C up by four, Lamar Morinia put up a 3-pointer from the corner, drawing a foul from Ricky Frazier in the process. The trey went, and so did the subsequent free throw, leaving the score tied 93-all.
The Warriors kept up the torrid pace in the extra period, and Danny Allen's deep 3 with about a minute to play put L-C up by five, essentially sealing the outcome.
Allen and Martin Brothers scored 20 points apiece for the Warriors, 26-5 overall, who remain atop the Frontier Conference at 10-3.
The Morinia brothers -- Larry and Lamar -- scored 33 and 28 points, respectively, for the Lights, who lost for the first time since falling to L-C on Jan. 31 -- also in overtime -- to slip to 20-11 and 8-5.
