Dessing named assistant coach at LCSC

Former University of Montana Tech men’s basketball coach Rick Dessing has been named assistant men’s basketball coach at Lewis-Clark State College, new Warrior coach Tim Walker has announced.

Dessing compiled a 260-244 record during his 16 years at the Montana Tech helm (1985-2001) and led the program to its only two appearances in the NAIA National Tournament. His teams won seven Frontier Conference championships and produced 15 Academic All-Americans. He also compiled a 158-127 record against conference schools. Earlier this year, he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame.

“We are very excited to have Rick in our basketball program,” Walker says.  “His experience and wealth of knowledge about the game and the league will prove to be invaluable.  He’s a good person, a proven winner, and will do what it takes to help us be successful on and off the court.” 

Rick will be in charge of scheduling, academic progress, and play an active role in recruiting and coaching.

After Montana Tech, Dessing became head coach of the Magic City Snowbears of the Midwestern Basketball Association Pro League and led the team to a 14-8 record and a second-lace finish. He then spent a year at Mohave Community College in Colorado City, Ariz., as campus facilitator before becoming head coach and vice president of basketball operations for the Butte Bandits of the All-American Professional Basketball League, a new 10-team league that is scheduled to begin play in November of this year.

Dessing is a 1979 graduate of Ball State University and earned a Master’s degree in Administration from the University of Wisconsin in 1985 while serving as a graduate assistant coach and adjunct instructor at the Big Ten Conference school.
