Humboldt St. distances itself from L-C men down stretch, 60-53

ARCATA, Calif. -- Down by 16 points at one juncture, the Lewis-Clark State men pulled within three before suffering a 60-53 setback to Humboldt State on Thursday.

The Warriors, who sustained their first loss in nine official outings, made it a three-point game with less than two minutes remaining.

But a "tough charge call" went against L-C, according to coach Tim Walker, and the Lumberjacks answered with a Kevin Johnson layup. Grayson Moyer then made four free throws down the stretch.

HSU, an NCAA Division II club, improved to 3-0.

"We're happy with the way we hung in there and the fact we had a chance to win it," Walker said. "We just couldn't quite get it done."

LCSC opened the game by jumping to a 7-1 edge. But the Lumberjacks put on a 24-4 run to take the lead for good.

HSU, which averaged 103 points in its first two games, was forced by the Warriors to play at a slower pace.

"They kept us from scoring, but we still managed to get a big lead," HSU coach Tom Wood said. "But we were the ones who couldn't figure out how to hold onto a big lead."

L-C got 13 points, seven rebounds and four steals from Jamal Harris. Chris Pitts and Keith Scarbrough added nine and eight points, respectively.

Spencer Bishop, who was playing his first game after missing the last three outings with a sprained ankle, held Lumberjacks point guard Jeremiah Ward to nine points. (Walker called Ward "probably the best point guard we'll see this season.")

The Warriors, who have been bothered by injuries, suited up 10 players. Steven Thompson, who is coming off a broken foot, saw his first action with L-C. The 6-3 junior forward went scoreless in three minutes.

The Warriors will face Western State of Colorado tonight at 7 at Arcata.

This gathering was meant to be a tournament, but a fourth team backed out. So these are all single games.
