Durrett, Warriors pull out victory over Western State; Guard's backdoor layup in final seconds gives L-C 60-59 victory

ARCATA, Calif. -- The Warriors tried to turn Western State's aggression to their own advantage, and they evidently succeeded on their last play of the game.

Eric Durrett scored a backdoor layup with three seconds left to give Lewis-Clark State a 60-59 win Friday night in a neutral-site men's basketball game at Humboldt State.

The Warriors bounced back from their only loss of the season, a 72-53 setback to Humboldt the previous night.

Trailing by a point, the Warriors got a defensive rebound from Jamal Harris, called a timeout with 10 seconds left, and called a play designed for Durrett breaking to the basket.

The bounce pass came from point guard Spencer Bishop, one of his seven assists for the game.

"With their pressure defense, we hoped it would work," Warriors coach Tim Walker said. "We executed, and Eric got the layup. ... I was proud of our guys and the composure they showed."

Lorens Knudsen's long 3-pointer for Western State missed at the buzzer.

Lewis-Clark State struggled early with the Mountaineers' athleticism, falling behind 11-0. They switched to a zone defense, began stopping Western's penetration, and stuck with the zone the rest of the way.

Durrett finished with 18 points to lead all scorers, while teammates Keith Scarbrough, Chris Pitts and Jared Tikker all had eight for the Warriors.

Clem Benton paced Western State with 21 points and Stan Harley added 11.

The Warriors (9-1) are idle until competing in a Corban College tournament next Friday and Saturday at Salem, Ore. Western State (2-3), of Colorado, is back on the floor tonight to face Humboldt.
