BUTTE, Mont. -- This time,
the Lewis-Clark State women
staged their comeback too
early.
After falling behind by
eight points in the first
five minutes, the Warriors
rallied to a one-point
halftime lead. But they were
swept away by
Montana-Western's
second-half torrent, and
lost 72-58 in the semifinals
of the Frontier Conference
tournament Friday.
The setback probably
signals the end of LCSC's
season. At 22-10 and ranked
28th in the nation, the
Warriors are an unlikely
at-large pick for the NAIA
Division I tournament. It
would be their second
consecutive miss after a run
of eight straight
appearances.
With less than a minute
remaining in the first half,
Katya Yancheva connected on
a 3-pointer to give LCSC a
35-34 lead. That was after
the Bulldogs had sprinted to
a 17-9 advantage.
UMW answered by opening
the second half with an 18-4
blitz. The Warriors could
get no closer than six
behind the rest of the game.
After converting 48.4
percent of its first-half
shots, LCSC drooped to 28.1
percent in the second half.
It was a reverse of the
Warriors' win on Thursday,
when they shook off a
20-point deficit to beat
Great Falls.
The Bulldogs' Katherine
Sunwall, who notched 10
points in the first five
minutes, finished with 25
points and 10 rebounds. She
went 10-for-13 from the
floor.
L-C was paced by Nikki
Haerling's 16-point,
four-assist showing. Ashley
Baker tacked on 11 points
and six rebounds.
