It's not quite true to say there was no
drama in the Lewis-Clark State women's
basketball game Friday night. There were
L-C's pursuits of the largest margin of
victory and the highest point total in
school history to keep track of.
As for the outcome, that was a
foregone conclusion.
Against Johnson & Wales, a 3-year-old
program that has never won a game, the
Warriors marauded to a 108-33 demolition
at the Activity Center.
The 75-point difference was indeed
the biggest blowout in L-C history, but
the home team did fall three points shy
of its largest single-game output. (The
Warriors hung 111 on Westminster in
2000.)
LCSC (10-2, ranked 16th in the NAIA)
will get another chance to edit its
record book when these teams play at 2
this afternoon.
The Warriors' performance was most
notable for its balance. All eight
players scored at least seven points,
topped by Ashley Baker's 24-point (and
18-rebound) contribution. Baker was
joined in double-figure points by five
teammates.
The assist-to-basket ratio was
telling: LCSC had 32 assists on its 43
field goals. Jade Fulbright and Cami
Kalbfleisch notched eight and seven
setups, respectively.
The Warriors did go into a bit of a
lurch early in the second half. But
other than that, their intensity was
ratcheted up all evening.
"We can't worry about our opponents,"
L-C coach Brian Orr said. "We try to do
the best job we can scheduling, and then
we go out and we're going to focus on
ourselves -- especially in the
preseason. It's all about who we are,
where we're at and our development as a
team."
The Warriors' most dazzling stretch
of the evening came midway through the
first half. Katya Yancheva made
back-to-back 3-pointers, followed
immediately by a triple from Janeen
Nelson. Then Katie Hart snaked down the
baseline and flipped in a reverse layup,
and Kim Preston potted a perimeter
jumper.
That flurry made it 33-5 with 9:15
left in the half.
The Wildcats (0-13) were without
their head coach, Rex Terry, who was
hospitalized with high blood pressure
before the team left Denver on Thursday.
Terry is now out of the hospital and
doing well, assistant coach Troy Grimes
said.
JWU is an NAIA Division II club that
doesn't belong to a conference. That
makes scheduling very difficult.
"It's very tough to build it," Grimes
said. "It's just like I've told them,
the North Carolinas and the Tennessees
had to build it. They were in their
third year at one time.
"They've got a lot of heart," Grimes
said of the players. "If they're not
going to quit, then I don't think
myself, coach and university should quit
on them."
After feasting on 30 Wildcat
turnovers, Orr wants the Warriors to
focus on their half-court attack in
today's contest.
"I know we got a lot of baskets out
of transition," he said, "but tomorrow
we're going to really focus on running
our set plays and executing them a
little bit better than we did tonight."
NOTES -- LCSC was without Terri
Wittmer and Vanessa West. Wittmer has a
knee injury and was cleared to play, but
the team opted to rest her. West broke
the middle finger on her left hand, and
is expected to miss four weeks, Orr
said. ... With her 18 boards, Baker's
career total is up to 744. The junior
will probably overtake Kendra West's
record of 750 in today's game.
