L-C women upset No. 2 Carroll 60-48 in conference opener

HELENA, Mont. -- Lewis-Clark State fired a shot heard round the NAIA on Thursday night, knocking off second-ranked Carroll 60-48 in the Frontier Conference opener for both women's basketball teams.

The Warriors, curiously enough, had fallen one spot to 17th in this week's NAIA Division I poll.

"It was one of the biggest wins on the road as long as I can remember," said Brian Orr, LCSC's fifth-year coach. "When something went wrong, we had an answer for it."

The first potential problem for the Warriors (14-2) was foul trouble. Starters Jade Fulbright and Aundrea Morrison spent much of the first half on the bench, but Terri Wittmer and Katya Yancheva came in and hit timely shots.

Their play helped L-C build a five-point halftime edge.

Then point guard Katie Hart fouled out with five minutes to play. But Fulbright came to the rescue, taking over the reins as the Warriors held off the Saints (16-2) down the stretch.

L-C took control with a scoring spree that put it up 45-30 with seven minutes remaining. Neither team mustered much offense down the stretch.

"We didn't play very good offense, but our defense was as good as any I've seen in the last 3-4 years," Orr said.

The Warriors stifled the nation's leading 3-point shooting team, limiting Carroll to four treys on 25 attempts. The Saints hit just 28 percent of their field-goal tries.

Morrison led L-C with 18 points while Ashley Baker had 15 points to go with her game-high 14 rebounds. Fulbright finished with 11 points, all from the free-throw line.

Orr lauded Yancheva's play in the first half: "She gave us such a lift, playing so hard defensively. She's starting to play with so much confidence."
