Shanta Coleman Signs Letter-of-Intent to Attend LCSC and Play Basketball

LEWISTON, ID-Shanta Coleman (Chula Vista, CA/Umpqua CC/Montgomery HS), has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Lewis-Clark State College and play women’s basketball for Warrior head coach Brian Orr beginning in the fall of 2001.

"We are extremely excited to have Shanta joining our basketball program," said Orr. "She is an extremely talented player who can score as well as dish out assists."

Coleman, a 5-10 point guard, helped lead Umpqua Community College of Roseburg, OR to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges’ title in the 1999-200 season with a 31-1 record. During that year, she was named Most Valuable Player of the NWAACC Tournament and was also the Co-MVP of the NWAACC’s Southern Division (Washington State’s Sarah Bennett was the other MVP). Coleman finished sixth in the NWAAC in scoring with a 17.8 points per game average and was fifth in assists per game with 5.9. She also made 50% of her field goals and made 117 free throws. As a freshman, she was named to the NWAACC Southern Division’s First-Team after averaging 11.9 ppg and 5.17 apg. Coleman led the Timberwomen to a 28-4 record in the 1998-99 season. She played on the most successful teams in the history of the UCC program, posting 59 wins in two years. Coleman is: sixth all-time in points, 957; fifth in single-season scoring, 566 points; and holds the career record in assists with 343.

Shanta Coleman joins fellow recruits: Kyla Harris, Kendra West, Leah McCauley, and Amy Flaig in Orr’s first recruiting class at Lewis-Clark State.

The Warriors finished last year with a 33-4 overall record and posted a 12-2 Frontier Conference record, and made it the NAIA Women’s Division I Final Four, losing to eventual National Champion, Oklahoma City. Lewis-Clark State has made six consecutive appearances in the NAIA National Tournament. L-C won the Frontier Conference regular-season and post-season titles.
