L-C men can't find the basket, suffer 59-47 setback

It took Lewis-Clark State 13 months before it finally suffered a basketball loss at the Activity Center. And two hours later, the Warriors were suddenly burdened with a two-game losing streak.

Following the Warrior women's loss Saturday night, the men also sustained a setback. It was a lack of offensive traction that doomed LCSC in a 59-47 Frontier Conference loss to Carroll, the third-ranked team in the NAIA.

The Warriors (12-11, 5-4) spent most of this game in perpetual rally mode. The Saints took the lead for good midway through the first half, but were only up by single digits until late in the game.

L-C's last chance at a rally was set up by Jared Tikker, who drained a baseline jumper with 6:42 left to make it 47-43.

But on their next three possessions, the Warriors came up empty. On one trip, Tikker canned a midrange jumper -- only to have it wiped out due to an LCSC timeout that was called a moment before he fired.

At that point, the Saints (20-3, 7-2) made their move. Travis Williams and Jeff Hays each nailed 3-pointers during their team's 12-4 game-closing spree.

Carroll spent the entire game in a matchup zone -- and the Warriors never quite adjusted to the scheme. They hit 16 of 46 floor tries, which included a 5-for-22 clip from 3-point range.

"We played so well against the zone at Montana Tech," L-C coach Tim Walker said, "but I thought tonight we were impatient, we took quick shots, we didn't get the ball inside enough. And combine that with turning it over 20 times, you're just going to have trouble beating a good basketball team like Carroll."

Saints coach Gary Turcott said he didn't expect to use the zone all night, but stuck with it when the Warriors struggled.

"It's a little bit different type of zone, but nothing they haven't seen before," Turcott said.

LCSC's most glaring statistic was point guard Jonathan Burnett's 0-for-11 showing. Until this game, the 6-foot junior had been the Warriors' hottest player.

"He goes 0-for-11 -- that's a great shooter," Turcott said. "That's going to happen about once every five years for that kid."

The Saints were coming off a disappointing loss at Westminster on Thursday night.

But if any team could forge a split on this marathon road trip, it's Carroll. The club from Helena, Mont., showed its tenacity last year, advancing to the NAIA Final Four.

"They have so much pride and so much confidence in themselves," Turcott said of his players. "They were pretty embarrassed Thursday by Westminster. ... We didn't know the zone would bother L-C that much, but we knew we would get a great effort out of our guys."

NOTES -- Grangeville native Chris Kaschmitter, a 6-6 freshman post with Carroll, collected four rebounds and no points in 12 minutes.
