basketball team signs Mikel Watson

State College men’s basketball coach Tim
Walker has announced that 6-foot-2 guard
Mikel Watson will transfer from Utah State
University and play for the Warriors next
season.
Watson, who
will be a senior, played in 15 games for the
Aggies last year, and started two. Before
suffering an injury, he averaged 7.1 points
and nearly 2.0 rebounds a game as the Aggies
went 23-12 overall. He was fourth on the
team in 3-pointers and also had 43 assists
and 15 steals.
Watson is from
Oceanside, Calif., and originally signed
with the University of Wyoming out of high
school. He played in 28 games and started
nine as a true freshman during the 2003-04
season. He averaged 5.9 points, 1.6 rebounds
and 1.6 assists per game. He scored a
season-high 21 points in the final game of
the season against Brigham Young in the
first round of the Mountain West Conference
Tournament. He started five of the final six
games of the season and average 12.5 points
and 3.3 rebounds.
He then
attended Saddleback Junior College where he
earned first team all-Orange Empire
Conference honors and helped the Gauchos to
a 28-3 mark. He averaged 14.4 points, 3.1
rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.6 steals per
game. He then sat out the 2006 season before
playing for the Aggies last season.
The Warriors
are the defending Frontier Conference
regular-season and tournament champions. |
