LCSC men turn up the offense for 97-52
win over Bethany

With the starting five shooting 67.5 percent from the field, the Lewis-Clark State College men’s basketball team nearly hit the century mark for the third time this season in claiming its fifth straight victory, a 97-52 triumph over Bethany University in a nonconference matchup at the LCSC Activity Center on Saturday. 

LCSC, which ranks No. 6 in the NAIA in scoring defense, again put the defensive screws to Bethany, holding the California NAIA Division II school to just 33 percent shooting from the field. In an 84-53 win over Bethany on Friday, the Warriors held the Bruins to 38 percent from the field. 

In the meantime, the Warrior offense was cranked up as the starting five hit 27 of 40 shots from the field and scored 68 of the team’s total points despite playing in only a little more than half of the game. Overall, LCSC hit 39-of-66 shots from the field for 59.1 percent. 

LCSC, now 11-4 overall, scored the first nine points of the game and led 25-4 less than seven minutes into the game. LCSC took a 51-27 advantage into intermission as Mike Gordy and Teran Lee had 12 points apiece. 

Lee, a senior guard from Chicago, led the Warriors with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Senior forward Chris Pitts, who hit 7-of-9 shots, added 17 points, while Gordy had 16 on 7-of-8 shooting. Steve Thompson added 10 points. 

Pitts just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, and also had three steals, three blocked shots and two assists. Lee had six assists, while Thompson added seven rebounds. 

On the defensive side, LCSC forced 27 turnovers, including 13 by steals. The Warriors also held Bethany to just 18-of-54 shooting from the field and held a 38-34 rebounding edge. 

John Bell led the Bruins with 18 points and 15 rebounds, while Erick Nelson added 10 points. Bethany is now 2-10 overall. 

LCSC opens Frontier Conference play next Saturday at home against Westminster. The men’s contest will start at 8 p.m., following the women’s contest at 6 p.m.
