LCSC women’s
team falls to No. 1-ranked
AUM at nationals
5-15-07
MOBILE, Ala. – The Lewis-Clark State College
women’s tennis team learned first hand on
Tuesday why Auburn University Montgomery is
the favorite to defend its title in the NAIA
National Tennis Championships.
Top-ranked AUM handed the Warriors a 7-0
setback in the tournament’s second round to
end LCSC’s season. The Warriors, ranked No.
18 in the NAIA’s final poll, finish the
season at 9-10 after making their 11th
straight appearance at the national
tournament.
The Senators rolled to three victories in
doubles play and then rolled to straight set
wins in four of the six singles matches
before play was stopped. In the two matches
that were stopped early, AUM led in both
although LCSC’s Kaylan Crane trailed only
6-5 in her match at No. 6 singles against
Rachel Dunlavey.
AUM set the
tone early, rolling to 8-1, 8-2, and 8-4
victories in doubles play. In singles play,
LCSC only won seven games outside of Crane,
compared to 58 for the Senators.
LCSC, which knocked off Lee 6-3 in the
opening round on Monday, lose two seniors
off the team, including Maria Resende, who
played No. 1 singles this year. Representing
the Warriors at nationals this year were
four sophomores, two juniors, a freshman and
a senior.
The victory moves AUM’s record to 27-1 on
the year. The Senators will take on No. 9
Savannah College of Art & Design (12-4) on
Wednesday in the quarterfinal round. Only
eight teams are left alive in the
single-elimination tournament.
