Oklahoma City claims title in Cannon’s tournament

11-25-06

Tournament MVP B.J. Walker was one of three Oklahoma City University players with 17 points as the Stars showed why they are the NAIA’s No. 2- ranked team with a 79-51 win over Lewis-Clark State in the Cannon’s Building Materials Tournament at the LCSC Activity Center on Saturday night.

Walker, a 6-foot-10 senior, had 17 points and 10 rebounds to finish the two-day event with a total of 27 points, 19 rebounds, four blocked shots and two assists.

Nick Covington and Willie Irick also added 17 points for the Stars, who are now 7-0 on the season and captured the title in the tournament. Earlier Saturday, Montana State University-Northern stopped Corban College  80-68.

Irick, who joined Walker on the All-Tournament team, added nine rebounds and hit 6-of-9 shots from the field. Covington was a perfect 5-fot-5 at the 3-point line to help the Stars dominate in almost every phase of the game.

The Stars went up 14-5 early and although the Warriors did cut the lead to five, OCU was able to make it 35-19 at halftime and cruise from there.

LCSC coach Tim Walker said his club didn’t execute early, which led to a number of problems. The Warriors scored only three free throws during an eight-minute stretch of the first half and wound up just shooting just 16-of-53 from the field for 30.2 percent.

OCU was 31-of-60 from the field, 51.7 percent, including 10-of-19 at the 3-point line, 52.6 percent. The Stars also held a 42-30 rebounding edge and fblocked nine Warrior shots.

Mike Gordy had 16 points and seven rebounds to pace the Warriors, while Teran Lee added 14 points. The two also made the All-Tournament team along with Jason Braun of Corban and Ronnie Simpson of Montana State University-Northern.

LCSC will be back in action at the MSU-Northern Tournament in Havre next weekend, playing King’s College and Augstana College. LCSC’s next home game is Dec. 15 against Biola University.
