Warrior women’s tennis team wins opener at nationals

MOBILE, Ala. – The Lewis-Clark State College women’s tennis team (shown left) defeated Lee University of Tennessee 6-3 in Monday’s opening round of the NAIA national championships at the Mobile Tennis Center. 

The Warrior men didn’t fare as well, falling to Webber International of Florida 6-3 on Monday. The loss ended the season for the Warrior men, who were making their eighth straight national appearance. 

The LCSC women, making their 11th straight national appearance, won two of three doubles matches and then followed with its top three singles players all picking up wins. 

No. 1 singles player Maria Resende captured a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brooklyn Goodell, and teamed up with Jamie Chad to score an 8-5 doubles win. Chad also won her singles match in three sets. 

Mei Fong and Alyson Peck picked up LCSC’s other doubles victory, while Shefat Baishakhi and Caity Jones rolled to straight set victories in singles play. 

Cedric Dufour was a double winner for the Warrior men. He teamed up with Ari Zaslow for the Warriors’ only doubles victory with an 8-3 win. He then swept his singles match by scores of 6-3 and 6-2. 

LCSC’s other win came in No. 1 singes as Boria Molas claimed a 6-0, 7-6 win over Enrique Catter. 

The Warriors’ downfall came in the third set of singles play where they lost all three third sets by identical 6-4 scores. 

Webber International advances to meet No. 3 seed Embry Riddle of Florida in Tuesday’s second round.
