LCSC women’s volleyball team rolls over WWC

 9-26-06

The Lewis-Clark State College women’s volleyball team made short work of Walla Walla College by rolling to a 30-23, 30-13, 30-14 victory over the Wolves in a non-conference match at the LCSC Activity Center on Tuesday night.

It was the second win over the Seventh-Day Adventist college in eight days for the Warriors, who improve to 4-10 overall, while Walla Walla College drops to 6-6. Last Tuesday, the Warriors captured a 30-16, 30-20, 30-20 victory at Walla Walla.

“Tonight we were able to go in and convert on 5-6 points in a row and keep our errors to 1-2 points in a row,” LCSC coach Erin Mellinger said. “We really wanted to keep our errors down tonight. In the past, we’ve taken everything in sets of three. Instead of playing the match 1-30, we played in sets of three (points). We wanted to score three straight points or limit our errors to no more than three in a row. Tonight we did a good job of cutting our errors down to 1-2 in a row.”

The Warriors dominated the match, jumping to early leads in each game. In the first game, the Wolves staged a minor comeback to make it close, but the Warriors controlled the net and took advantage of shaky serving to roll in games two and three. LCSC led 9-7 in Game 3 when Dawn Ingram went on a streak of 12 straight service points, including three aces.

“I think tonight went really well,” said LCSC sophomore middle hitter Julie Maciboba (pictured above), who finished with 11 kills and had two of the Warriors’ 11 service aces. “The last time we played them, we struggled a bit, but tonight we did a better job. I think we played more consistent.”

Freshman Kelly Scott of Moscow led the Warriors with 12 kills, while Brittney Kubik added nine. Mindy Meyer had 27 assists and two service aces, while Lindsay Scott had a match-high 10 digs.

As a team, the Warriors hit a season-high .410 in the match. LCSC also had 44 kills, compared to 18 for the Wolves. The Wolves also only hit 78.4 percent of their serves in play.

The Warriors will play their first two Frontier Conference matches on the road this weekend, traveling to Havre, Mont., to face Montana State-Northern on Friday and then the University of Great Falls in Great Falls on Saturday.

“We are starting to mesh,” Mellinger said of her young team. “If we can have 3-4 people on (their game) during the same night, we can play with anyone. I do like the way we are playing. We are ready to get over the hump and now is the time to do it.”
