COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Both
LCSC teams are off this week after
completing the first half of Frontier
Conference play. The Warrior women have a
two-game lead in the conference standings at
7-0 and have won nine straight to stand 18-3
overall. The men are tied with Westminster
for first place at 6-1 and have won nine of
their last 10 for a 15-6 season mark.
Both
teams have seven conference games remaining,
starting on Feb. 9 with a home doubleheader
against Westminster.
Prior
to the season, the conference coaches voted
to have this week off from conference play
to keep the conference tournament closer to
the national tournament. The national
tournaments for both men and women begin on
March 19 and the championship games for the
Frontier Conference tournaments are March 8.
MEN’S BASEBALL
Members of the 2007 Lewis-Clark State
College baseball team will receive their
World Series rings during the LCSC Ring
Ceremony Dinner on Saturday.
Tickets for the event are $15 and can be
purchased at the LCSC athletic department
office on the main floor, or by calling
Jasmine King at 792-2275.
Last
year’s team won the program’s 15th national
Avista NAIA World Series title by going
undefeated in the 10-team double-elimination
tournament. LCSC, which finished 58-5
overall, outscored its five series opponents
43-17.
It
was the Warriors’ fifth title of the decade
and marked the 19th time in the last 26
years the Warriors have played in the
national championship game.
A
program record eight players were drafted
from last year’s team and several of those
players, including Beau Mills, Mark Thompson
and Chris Kissock, are expected to be in
attendance.
For
more information on the banquet, call
792-2275.
COLLEGE TENNIS
Both
Warrior teams play three matches in three
days, hoping to come out with a sweep.
The
Warrior men stand 2-2 on the season after
defeating Whitman twice last week, but
falling to the University of Idaho. Ali
Faris leads the LCSC men with a 4-0 record,
while Kevin Lee, Cedric Dufour and Arslan
Mermut each have two victories this season.
LCSC
will face Montana State University-Billings
twice this week and also will battle Whitman
again. Last season, the Warriors swept MSU-Billings
9-0. The Warrior men play the first 14
matches against NCAA Division I-III teams.
On the
women’s side, the Warriors jump back into
action after a two-week break from its
season-opening loss to Gonzaga. The Warriors
also play MSU-Billings twice. Last year, the
Warriors defeated the Yellowjackets 8-1.
The Warriors also take on Whitman on
Saturday.
WOMEN’S TRACK
The
Warriors head to nearby Moscow to take part
in the McDonald’s Invitational at the
University of Idaho Kibbie Dome.
LCSC
has 12 athletes on its women’s track team in
the first year the college has officially
sponsored the sport. Among the dozen, 10 are
members of the cross country team, while a
hurdler and a weight thrower round out the
roster.
The
all-day meet begins at 9 a.m. with field
events and some preliminaries in some of the
shorter races.
