Warriors fall in title game of NNU tourney

NAMPA -- Northwest Nazarene began to pull away midway through the first half, and the Crusaders breezed to a 77-55 victory over Lewis-Clark State College in the championship game of a tournament here on Saturday.

Northwest Nazarene rode a late first-half run to a 40-26 lead at the break, and the Crusaders' momentum carried over to the second half. They ran off a 6-0 spurt after halftime, forcing L-C to use a full-court press the rest of the way.

That enabled the Warriors to stop the bleeding, but they were unable to narrow the gap.

"We just couldn't make up the difference," said L-C coach Brian Orr, whose team was playing its fifth game in eight days.

According to Orr, the loss resulted from a combination of errors on his team's part.

"No. 1, we just didn't execute offensively," he said. "The second thing is, you've got to credit Northwest Nazarene. They've got a deep bench, they wanted to get up and down the floor and they did that."

L-C (6-3) only committed 12 turnovers, and the Warriors received a game-high 17 rebounds and 12 points from Ashley Baker. Cami Kalbfleisch and Nikki Haerling added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

But that wasn't nearly enough to offset Northwest Nazarene (3-1), which received double-digit point contributions from five players. Jessica Metz led the way with 14 points, and Danielle Pridgen and Whitney VanBrocklin chipped in 13 points apiece.

L-C, which landed two players -- Kalbfleisch and Baker -- on the all-tournament team, returns to action Friday at Western Baptist in Salem, Ore.
