L-C completes weekend sweep of
Fraser Valley

The Lewis-Clark State men's and women's basketball teams collected two more wins over Fraser Valley on Saturday at Warrior Gym -- even though they weren't as lopsided as the night before.

The L-C women, who led by just two points with 90 seconds remaining, beat the British Columbia visitors 80-72. The Warrior men won 77-51.

LCSC never trailed in the women's contest. But after streaking to a 24-8 edge, the Warriors spent the rest of the game holding off the Cascades.

With 1:47 left, Fraser Valley's Jamie Born made a basket to cut L-C's lead to 70-68.

Warrior post Ashley Baker, who poured in a career-high 31 points, answered with a three-point play. L-C then made 8 of 8 free throws down the stretch.

Baker, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, also nabbed nine rebounds in 33 minutes of play. Nikki Haerling, a junior transfer, added 23 points.

In the men's game, the Warriors scored the first nine points, and were up by 19 at halftime. Their edge never dipped below 19 in the second half.

"There was never a major spurt," L-C coach George Pfeifer said. "... It was just kind of a continuous grind."

Martin Brothers, who tallied 16 points, was the only Warrior who broke into double figures. Ten of the 12 L-C players who saw court time scored.

Pfeifer lauded the point guard play of Danny Allen and Spencer Bishop. Neither player committed a turnover, and Bishop took three charges.

Things get much more difficult for both L-C teams next week. The women will play an exhibition game at Gonzaga next Saturday while the men will face Point Loma, Concordia and Notre Dame de Namur at Westminster's tournament.
