WARRIOR WOMEN; L-C surpasses 20-win barrier again

By BOB PRESLEY

For the 14th consecutive season, the Lewis-Clark State women's basketball team has cracked the 20-win plateau.

The Warriors crested that summit Saturday night, crushing Great Falls 80-54 in their final appearance at the LCSC Activity Center.

The win improved the Warriors, 20-8 overall and 9-3 in Frontier Conference games, to 16-1 at home. While L-C coach Brian Orr appreciates that mark, he said it also points out the area where his team needs to improve.

"The road," Orr said. "The road is big, you have to have different mentality on the road. The last two games we feel really good about the way we played. Now we win our next two and I think we have great chance to go to the national tournament."

Kendra West, the Warriors' lone senior was recognized prior to the game. Already the program's career rebounding leader, West added seven boards Saturday, raising her total 723.

L-C took immediate control of the game, outscoring the Argos 17-6 in the first six minutes. Jade Fulbright and Ashley Baker poured in six and five points, respectively, to pace the Warriors' opening spurt.

"We got off to a good start," Orr said "We seemed to get some good spurts at all the right times."

L-C went on six scoring runs of six or more points, including a personal six-point tear by Baker, ending at the 6:04 mark of the first of the first half.

Other than an 11-point run by Great Falls with 6:32 left in the game, the Warriors did not allow any scoring rallies of more than five points by the Argos.

Orr attributed the win to an overall team effort, in which each member of the Warrior squad scored, and a smothering defense.

"Our man-to-man was doing really great," said Orr. "We went to a zone and that gave us a few problems, but we got back on track right away."

"I thought it was a great team effort, each time I looked up it was somebody different taking control."

L-C held the Argos to 5-of-25 shooting from 3-point range and held Great Falls to 35 percent from the field.

The Warriors dominated the boards in the first half and finished the game with a 49-39 rebound advantage over the Argos.

Baker led L-C with a game highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds. West and Fulbright each contributed 12 points, while Nikki Haerling added 10 points and five steals for L-C.

Argo guard Kim Freeman had a team-high 13 points. Teammate Melanie Green added 11 points.
