L-C holds off Westmont to capture Azusa tourney

AZUSA, Calif. -- Lewis-Clark State led from start to finish to beat Westmont 79-74 on Saturday and claim the unofficial championship of a Thanksgiving women's basketball tournament here.

L-C, 6-0, did get a bit of a scare at the end. Westmont's Jenn Tolle canned a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left to cut the margin to nine points. Westmont's Ali Mooty then stole L-C's inbounds pass, made a layup and was fouled. Mooty converted the three-point play, which made it a six-point game with nine seconds on the clock.

But LCSC's Jade Fulbright then drained 1 of 2 foul shots, and Westmont managed just two free throws with one second left.

"I never felt like we were ever in trouble at any point of the game," L-C coach Brian Orr said. "It was frustrating that we couldn't put the game away."

In this meeting of teams that share the nickname Warriors, L-C led by as much as 14 in the first half and 19 in the second.

Junior transfer Aundrea Morrison had her best game at LCSC, putting up game-highs in points (27) and rebounds (13). L-C also got 14 points and 12 rebounds from Ashley Baker while Katie Hart posted eight points, seven assists and three steals.

LCSC was the only club in this four-team field that won both its games. The Warriors beat host team Azusa Pacific on Friday.

"We really wanted to come play schools in the (Golden State Athletic Conference)," Orr said. "They don't want to travel to Lewiston, so we had to come here."

Next week, L-C will make a trip through Washington, beginning with a meeting with Western Washington in Bellingham on Thursday.
