L-C bounces Whitman

WALLA WALLA --
The Warriors ended their five-game road trip
on a winning note, as they turned back a
second-half rally to beat Whitman College
68-54 in nonconference women's basketball
Tuesday.
"We had our best
first half, inside and out, of the season so
far," Lewis-Clark State coach Brian Orr
said. "In the second half, we came out flat
and Whitman hit some 3's. They tightened the
score on us, but never threatened to take
the lead."
The Warriors (7-2)
jumped out to a 43-21 intermission lead
against NCAA Division III Missionaries.
Aundrea Morrison and Ashley Baker dominated
the paint during the first 20 minutes, and
L-C also got 3-pointers from Cami
Kalbfleisch, Katie Hart and Terri Wittmer.
After intermission,
L-C shot a frigid 30 percent due to hurried
shooting, Orr said. Whitman had several
small scoring runs, and got as close as
56-45 with four minutes remaining.
At that point, the
Warriors salted the game away with a trey by
Jade Fulbright, and buckets in the paint
from Morrison and Vanessa West.
Morrison led LCSC
with 16 points, followed by Baker with 15.
Baker pulled down 11 boards, and Hart had
four assists and four steals to go with nine
points. Whitman's Laura Vertatschitsch led
all scorers with 19 points.
Baker, a 6-3 senior
post, left the game late in the second half
with a sprained ankle. Orr said he hoped
that she'd be able to play Friday night
against Warner Pacific.
The Warriors begin a
month-long homestand this week, with games
Friday and Saturday night against Warner
Pacific at the Activity Center.
"We've had a good,
tough road trip," Orr said, "and we're glad
to be home."
