LCSC women improve to 19-1
win conference win

State College’s inside tandem of Ashley
Baker and Aundrea Morrison proved to be more
than the Montana Tech women’s basketball
team could handle as the Warriors remained
on top of the Frontier Conference standings
with an 84-70 win over the Orediggers at the
LCSC Activity Center on Saturday night.
Baker
and Morrison, LCSC’s two senior posts,
combined for 30 points and 22 rebounds as
the Warriors controlled the inside game to
claim their 10th straight win. The Warriors,
ranked No. 2 in the NAIA are now 19-1
overall and 5-0 in conference play, while
Montana Tech falls to 13-6 and 1-4,
respectively.
Tech
could find the answers to stop LCSC’s inside
game as the Warriors held a 45-31 rebounding
edge, including 22 offensive rebounds, which
led to a number of easy put-backs. Baker led
the way with a game-high 15 rebounds to go
with her 14 points, while Morrison had 16
points and seven rebounds.
The
Warriors used an 8-4 run midway through the
first half to take control of the game. LCSC
led 49-31 at intermission, and by as much as
21 in the second half, before Tech rallied
and cut the margin to nine late in the game.
LCSC hit
31-of-64 shots (48.4 percent), including
7-of-15 at the 3-point line. Tech was just
27-of-61 (44.3 percent) and 4-of-19 at the
3-point line. Tech, however, did force LCSC
into 21 turnovers.
Jade
Fulbright also was in double figures for the
Warriors with 15 points, while Katya
Yancheva added nine. Janeen Nelson had eight
points and five assists, while Mandy Trout
added eight points.
Guard
Angela Gimeno finished with a game-high 18
points for Tech, while her sister Rebecca
Gimeno finished with 15 points, five assists
and three steals.
The
Warriors resume action next Thursday when
the travel to Billings, Mont., to face Rocky
Mountain. Next Saturday, the Warriors will
be in Helena to face Carroll to finish the
first half of the conference schedule. |
