BUTTE, Mont. -- Lewis-Clark State's goal of a Frontier Conference clean sweep fell one game and two points short.

Carroll nixed L-C's run at perfection, beating the Warriors 71-69 on Saturday night in the title game of the conference's women's basketball tournament.

It was L-C's first defeat in three months, ending a winning streak that had reached 22 games.

But it probably won't significantly alter the Warriors' position for the season's capping event, the NAIA Division I national tournament, which begins March 14 at Jackson, Tenn.

L-C, ranked second nationally since mid-January, could still draw one of the national tournament's four No. 1 seeds. And even if Saturday's loss costs the Warriors that distinction, their record (30-2) should merit a favorable placing when the 32-team bracket is announced early this week.

"It hurts right now -- we had a locker room filled with tears," L-C coach Brian Orr said. "We absolutely wanted to win this (tournament), but it's OK. I think going 14-0 in conference (in the regular season) is a bigger feat."

L-C performed with precision in the first half, connecting on 56 percent of its field goal attempts in opening a 10-point lead, 36-26, at the break.

But Carroll was every bit as effective in the second half, a period which saw surges by both teams. The Saints, who hit 5 of 11 3-pointers in the second half, broke away for a seven-point advantage with about two minutes remaining.

L-C made a last-ditch rally to pull within two, and had possession in the waning seconds. The Warriors, however, couldn't create a high-percentage opportunity; in fact, Orr said their last attempt, which was off the mark, may have come after the buzzer.

"We've had so many tight games that we were able to pull out at the end, maybe it was just someone else's time," Orr said.

Four Warriors scored in double figures, led by Janeen Nelson's 16 points. Ashley Baker contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Amy Brooks has 19 points for Carroll (26-4), which earns the conference's automatic berth to nationals.

"As disappointed as we are, we'll get past it," Orr said. "Sometimes after you've won so many in a row, a loss can refocus you. And that's how we're looking at this. Now we're on to the next step."
