Warriors clinch share of FC
crown; L-C women rely on defense
to grind out 64-53 win over
Montana-Western and ensure a tie
for conference title
2-18-07
DILLON, Mont. -- Three weeks
into the post-Aundrea Morrison
era, the Warrior women put a cap
on what their coach termed their
best weekend without the
All-American by nudging No. 7
Montana-Western 64-53 on
Saturday.
The
gritty win, paced by Janeen
Nelson's outside shooting, gives
second-ranked LCSC (26-1, 12-0)
at least a share of the Frontier
Conference title.
Following Friday night's 76-63
triumph over Montana Tech, the
Warriors played sterling
second-half defense -- mixing in
a matchup zone and fullcourt
press with man-to-man -- to hold
the Bulldogs to a 29-percent
shooting clip.
"In
the second half of both games
(this weekend)," said coach
Brian Orr, whose team bumped its
winning streak to 18 straight
games, "our defense has taken
over."
LCSC
bolted to a 7-0 lead early and
led by as much as nine in the
first half. But Western clawed
within three, 33-30, at
halftime.
After
the break, though, a variety of
played helped the club pull
away. Nelson buried 5 of 6 treys
on the night, totaling a
team-high 16 points. Katie Hart
dropped in six key points in the
second half and snared three
steals.
Terri
Wittmer also played an important
role off the bench, Orr said.
The senior from West
Yellowstone, Mont., grabbed a
steal and hit a crucial 3 after
intermission.
The
Warriors have played five
contests without Morrison, who
suffered a season-ending knee
injury on Jan. 27.
"One
of the big things is," Orr said,
"we have never lost our
confidence. We always find a way
to win."
Ashley Baker, burdened with foul
trouble for most of game, played
just 20 minutes. Still, she
corralled 10 rebounds and added
nine points.
