LCSC wraps up regular season with 78-54 win over Rocky Mountain

3-1-08

BILLINGS, Mont. – An 18-2 run to start the second half helped the Lewis-Clark State College women's basketball team put the finishing touches on a remarkable two-year run in the Frontier Conference with a 78-54 win over Rocky Mountain College in the regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors, ranked No. 10 in the NAIA, already had clinched its third straight regular-season conference title entering the game, finish conference play at 13-1. The Warriors' two-year conference mark of 27-1 in unmatched since LCSC joined the conference in 1999.

LCSC, 24-4 overall, will now be the top seed in the conference tournament, which opens Wednesday in Butte, Mont. LCSC will play the No. 8 seed team at 5 p.m., Pacific time, in the opening round. The No. 8 seed won't be decided until Saturday's play is complete, but if Montana Western defeats Great Falls Saturday night, Great Falls will be the No. 8 seed.

The top two seeds play on Wednesday, and with a win, they will get to take Thursday off before resuming semifinal play on Friday.

In Saturday's game, LCSC led 36-32 at halftime, but turned up the defensive intensity in the second half and converted some early turnovers into buckets. LCSC scored the first eight points of the second half and eventually finished an 18-2 run to make it 54-34 with a little less than 14 minutes remaining. The Warriors led by as much as 30, 71-41, in the second half in rolling to their sixth straight win.

LCSC outscored Rocky Mountain 40-22 in the second half.

With its fourth straight loss, Rocky Mountain finished 4-10 in conference play and 11-19 overall. Rocky's seed in the tournament won't be determined until after Saturday's play, but could be anywhere from fifth to eighth.

The Warriors forced 26 turnovers in the game and also held a 34-26 rebounding edge with 16 offensive boards.

For the game, LCSC was 39-of-70 from the field for 43 percent, while RMC was 21-of-51 for 41 percent.

Lacie Titmus scored a season-high 17 points to pace the Warriors as she had 11 in the second half. Jade Fulbright added 14 points, Kim Preston 11, and Mandy Troutt 10.   Preston hit three 3-pointers in the first half, while Fulbright and Troutt had eight points apiece in the second half.Liz Lewis led Rocky Mountain with 15 points.

One concern for LCSC is a knee injury suffered by Breianna Gaines. The junior forward was helped off the court and was later on crutches. The seriousness of the injury is not known.

This is the 17th straight season LCSC has had 20-plus victories. LCSC also has won five titles in the nine years it has been in the conference, and will be going after its seventh championship game appearance in the last nine years of the conference tournament. LCSC also is closing in on its 12th trip to the NAIA national tournament in the last 13 years.
