LCSC wraps up
regular season with
78-54 win over Rocky

BILLINGS, Mont. – An 18-2
run to start the second half
helped the Lewis-Clark State
College women's basketball
team put the finishing
touches on a remarkable
two-year run in the Frontier
Conference with a 78-54 win
over Rocky Mountain College
in the regular-season finale
for both teams on Saturday
afternoon.
The Warriors, ranked No. 10
in the NAIA, already had
clinched its third straight
regular-season conference
title entering the game,
finish conference play at
13-1. The Warriors' two-year
conference mark of 27-1 in
unmatched since LCSC joined
the conference in 1999.
LCSC, 24-4 overall, will now
be the top seed in the
conference tournament, which
opens Wednesday in Butte,
Mont. LCSC will play the No.
8 seed team at 5 p.m.,
Pacific time, in the opening
round. The No. 8 seed won't
be decided until Saturday's
play is complete, but if
Montana Western defeats
Great Falls Saturday night,
Great Falls will be the No.
8 seed.
The top two seeds play on
Wednesday, and with a win,
they will get to take
Thursday off before resuming
semifinal play on Friday.
In Saturday's game, LCSC led
36-32 at halftime, but
turned up the defensive
intensity in the second half
and converted some early
turnovers into buckets. LCSC
scored the first eight
points of the second half
and eventually finished an
18-2 run to make it 54-34
with a little less than 14
minutes remaining. The
Warriors led by as much as
30, 71-41, in the second
half in rolling to their
sixth straight win.
LCSC outscored Rocky
Mountain 40-22 in the second
half.
With its fourth straight
loss, Rocky Mountain
finished 4-10 in conference
play and 11-19 overall.
Rocky's seed in the
tournament won't be
determined until after
Saturday's play, but could
be anywhere from fifth to
eighth.
The Warriors forced 26
turnovers in the game and
also held a 34-26 rebounding
edge with 16 offensive
boards.
For the game, LCSC was
39-of-70 from the field for
43 percent, while RMC was
21-of-51 for 41 percent.
Lacie Titmus scored a
season-high 17 points to
pace the Warriors as she had
11 in the second half. Jade
Fulbright added 14 points,
Kim Preston 11, and Mandy
Troutt 10. Preston hit
three 3-pointers in the
first half, while Fulbright
and Troutt had eight points
apiece in the second
half.Liz Lewis led Rocky
Mountain with 15 points.
One concern for LCSC is a
knee injury suffered by
Breianna Gaines. The junior
forward was helped off the
court and was later on
crutches. The seriousness of
the injury is not known.
This is the 17th straight
season LCSC has had 20-plus
victories. LCSC also has won
five titles in the nine
years it has been in the
conference, and will be
going after its seventh
championship game appearance
in the last nine years of
the conference tournament.
LCSC also is closing in on
its 12th trip to the NAIA
national tournament in the
last 13 years.
